A tragic double homicide investigation in Sham Shui Po is currently underway following the discovery of two bodies in a residential unit on Monday (Aug 11), with police collecting evidence throughout the night.
The police received a report around 3.50pm yesterday regarding a man who was found lying unconscious in a unit of a residential building on 38-40 Cheung Sha Wan Road.
After firemen forcibly opened the door, officers discovered an 85-year-old woman, surnamed Wong, with a 4-inch neck injury while her 47-year-old son Lam was found lying unconscious on the bed. Both were certified dead at the scene.
Post-mortem examination will be conducted later to ascertain the causes of their death.
Officers later found a staircase leading to the rooftop, where they encountered Lam's 52-year-old sister, who was exhibiting signs of emotional instability and self-harm.
Police and firefighters worked together to bring the woman back to safety, who was later arrested on suspicion of murder.
Following the incident, officers cordoned off the building for investigation, including the rear alleyway.
Reports indicated that the investigation continued until approximately 11.50pm when officers left the building with several bags of suspected evidence.
It has been revealed that the unit housed a family of four: the deceased mother, the arrested sister, her husband, and the deceased brother.
Reports indicate that the brother had Down syndrome and regularly stayed at Caritas Chan Chun Ha Hostel, while the older sister has a history of mental health issues.
The incident came to light after the brother failed to return to the hostel for three weeks, prompting a social worker to contact the sister to arrange a home visit for 2.30pm.
After receiving no response from the unit and hearing noises from inside, the social worker informed her supervisor and contacted the police for assistance.
Initial investigations suggest that the sister used scissors to kill her mother and then suffocated her brother before attempting suicide on the rooftop, during which she discarded the scissors onto the awning below.
The case has been transferred to the District Crime Squad of Sham Shui Po for further investigations.
