Ryan Choi etches name into history after winning HK's first gold at World Fencing Championships

 Hong Kong foil fencer Ryan Choi Chun-yin has carved his name in history by winning a gold at the World Fencing Championships, becoming the first athlete from Hong Kong to achieve this distinction in the tournament.

After claiming the Asian title at the FIE Shanghai Foil Grand Prix in May, Choi triumphed over individual neutral athlete Kirill Borodachev with a score of 15:9 in the final on Wednesday, securing the gold medal.

In addition, Choi will also receive a US$40,000 award prize.

Choi and another star fencer, Edgar Cheung Ka-long, claimed a bronze in the World Fencing Championships back in 2023, while Cheung claimed a bronze back in 2022 in the individual event at the tournament. 

Vivian Kong Man-wai, the fencing gold medalist in women's epee at the Paris Olympics, claimed bronze medals at the World Fencing Championships in 2019 and 2022.
