19-year-old driver arrested after fatal Yuen Long hit-and-run

A 19-year-old male driver was arrested on Thursday following a suspected hit-and-run accident in Yuen Long that left a 71-year-old cyclist dead.

He was detained on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to report an accident.

The incident occurred at 6.28pm on Tuesday (Jul 1), when the private car, traveling along Long Ping Road toward Tin Shui Wai, struck the male cyclist. However, the driver failed to stop and fled the scene.

The cyclist sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Pok Oi Hospital unconscious. He was pronounced dead at 7.06pm.

The vehicle’s owners—the 19-year-old suspect’s grandparents, a 67-year-old man surnamed Yim and a 57-year-old woman surnamed Chiu—were also arrested on Wednesday.

Yim was granted bail and is required to report to the police in late this month, while Chiu remains in custody.
