The Manila hostage crisis occurred on August 23, 2010, when a disgruntled former Philippine police officer hijacked a Hong Kong tour bus at Rizal Park.
The botched police rescue operation resulted in eight fatalities, with authorities facing heavy criticism for their handling of the situation.
Following the tragedy, Tse Chi-kin became a prominent advocate for justice, persistently demanding an official apology from the Philippine government.
