Numerous mainland tourists chose to travel through Lok Ma Chau Station on the East Rail Line this past Friday to celebrate the Labour Day Golden Week holiday in Hong Kong, leading to extremely dense crowds at the station. At times, the congestion was so severe that some passengers were unable to exit the gates.
This morning, the Transport and Logistics Bureau addressed the situation on social media, expressing concern and stating that they have been in close contact with MTR Corporation, urging them to enhance services to ensure smooth and safe travel for passengers.
The bureau highlighted that the Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mable Chan, is deeply concerned about the traffic issues and has maintained close contact with the rail giant. She has been informed that measures have been implemented by MTR following the heavy passenger traffic.
After services concluded last night (May 2), MTR made special arrangements to manage the large volume of passengers efficiently and safely.
Additional staff will be deployed to assist travelers, passenger information will be enhanced, and coordination with telecommunications network providers will be improved to increase the Wi-Fi capacity at Lok Ma Chau Station.
The Transport and Logistics Bureau will continue to monitor the situation at Lok Ma Chau Station and other border points, maintaining close communication with transportation operators to adjust response plans timely during peak travel times as passengers arrive and depart Hong Kong.
