Yim is still fondly remembered for her powerful portrayal of "Red Auntie" in Heart of Greed. Besides acting, she is passionate about Chinese opera and was active enough to travel with a troupe to perform in Singapore last year. Often playing strong characters, what are her personal tips for maintaining top form in front of the camera?
1. Consistent Exercise
Having been in the industry for many years, Yim often had to stay up late filming. While this brought many great works to audiences, it constantly took a toll on her health. Therefore, over the last decade, she felt the need to invest more time in self-care and has persisted in exercising to stay healthy. Now, she gets up at 6 AM daily to go for a run. Her inspiration to start running came during the pandemic when she joined Chow Yun-fat and friends for trail running, doing it two to three times a week, sometimes even five days. They also challenge themselves on rugged mountain trails. She believes running not only improves patience and perseverance but also, through quick running, trains her cardiopulmonary function, giving her more vocal power and a brighter voice. "My voice has improved," she says, and her appearance radiates vitality.
2. Health Preservation Through Soups
Actresses, particularly concerned with appearance, can easily suffer from appearance anxiety, stressing over wrinkles and skin aging. However, Yim believes beauty radiates from within. She strongly adheres to the Cantonese wisdom of health preservation through soups, drinking different soups according to the seasons to nourish her skin and regulate her body. For example, she drinks Ching Po Leung in summer and chicken soup in winter. If she has to stay up late, she drinks American ginseng tea to replenish depleted energy.
3. Staying Up-to-Date with Trends
Yim is also very open to new things. She believes one needs to "keep up with the times" and stay attuned to popular culture, like the recent surge in popularity of short-form dramas. Maintaining an attitude of "there's no harm in participating," she has tried filming short dramas and is learning behind-the-scenes work from friends.
4. Maintaining Close Ties with Family and Friends
Good relationships are crucial for both physical and mental health. Yim shares a deep bond with her friends. Besides hiking together, they often meet for dim sum and can even openly discuss topics like funeral arrangements without taboo. Beyond her acting career, she has also been a volunteer for many years, caring for the community, cutting hair for the elderly, and more. Keeping herself active and doing what she loves naturally keeps her mindset young.
