Yamamoto Hamburg, founded by chef Shohei Yamamoto, officially opened on February 10, 2026, introducing an all-day dining concept centered on freshly made hamburg patties inspired by the warmth of everyday Japanese family meals.
During a recent visit shortly after the opening, the restaurant was already drawing steady lunchtime crowds, many curious about a concept that is familiar in Japan but still relatively new to Hong Kong diners.
A Japanese comfort classic arrives in Hong Kong
In Japan, hamburg — a thick, pan-seared patty made from a blend of beef and pork — is a staple of casual family dining. At Yamamoto Hamburg, the dish forms the core of the menu, with patties freshly ground, kneaded and cooked to order.
The restaurant uses what it describes as a carefully developed balance between lean meat and fat to create a patty that remains tender while holding its shape. Each set meal is served with Japanese white rice and miso soup, both of which come with unlimited refills.
During the visit, the staff brought a small cup of homemade vegetable and fruit juice at the start of the meal — a simple touch that reflects the brand’s focus on balanced home-style dining.

Signature hamburg with a range of flavors
The restaurant’s signature dish, Yamamoto’s Hamburg (HK$118), arrives in a bowl topped with a light Hollandaise soufflé. Inside the patty is melted cheese, paired with a mild miso-based sauce. The set also includes spaghetti, vegetables and egg in a light Japanese broth.
For diners who prefer stronger flavors, the Spicy Mentaiko Hamburg (HK$98) offers a savory contrast, with spicy cod roe layered on top of the patty.
A lighter option is the Grated Daikon and Ponzu Hamburg (HK$88), where grated Japanese radish and citrusy ponzu help balance the richness of the meat.
Several combination dishes are also available. The Chicken Nanban and Hamburg (HK$95) pairs the patty with crispy fried chicken, while the Deep-fried Shrimp and Hamburg (HK$125) combines seafood with the restaurant’s signature meat dish.
The menu also includes pasta options, such as Shiso Genovese Spaghetti (HK$95) and Spaghetti with Spicy Mentaiko Cream Sauce (HK$118), reflecting a mix of Japanese and Western influences.

A space designed for everyday dining
The Tseung Kwan O restaurant spans about 1,700 square feet and seats more than 60 guests. Designed by Japanese studio Wool Design Room, the interior features natural wood tones and soft lighting, creating a calm, welcoming atmosphere.
The setting reflects the restaurant’s concept of recreating the feeling of home-style meals — a place where diners can sit down for a simple but satisfying meal at any time of day.
Inspired by memories of home cooking
For chef Yamamoto, the idea behind the restaurant traces back to childhood memories.
“In my memory, the most delicious food always came from my mother’s busy figure in the kitchen,” he said. “That warmth of carefully mixing the patties and simmering them over a low flame for the health of her family is the origin of my creation of Yamamoto Hamburg.”
“I have always insisted on using safe, reliable ingredients infused with handmade warmth, as only food touched by human care can truly heal the heart,” he added.
With its first Hong Kong branch now open, Yamamoto hopes the restaurant will offer diners not only a new dish to try, but also a reminder of the comfort that simple, carefully prepared food can bring.
