Trump, after India pledge, says China is next target in push to curb Russian oil

US President Donald Trump said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to stop buying Russian oil, indicating his next target for similar commitments would be China, as part of a broader push to curb Moscow's energy revenue.

Trump expressed dissatisfaction with India's continued Russian oil imports during discussions with Modi, who assured him the country would cease such purchases.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also met with Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato to convey Washington's desire for Tokyo to stop importing Russian energy, reinforcing a coordinated effort to pressure allies.

In August, the US had announced an additional 25 percent tariff on India, for buying Russian oil.

China and India have been the two largest buyers of Russian seaborne crude, benefiting from substantial discounts. 

Russia remains India's top oil supplier, exporting 1.62 million barrels per day in 2025 through September — accounting for one-third of India's total oil imports.
