Local actress and former Miss Hong Kong Shirley Yeung Sze-ki is back in the headlines -- not for her latest role -- but for how she pinches pennies for her family as a mainland live-streaming star.
The 47-year-old mother of two has successfully traded the screen for the mainland live-streaming scene, where she reportedly earns approximately HK$200,000 per session.
It is estimated that she earns at least HK$2.5 million each month by hosting around 10 live-streaming sessions.
An exclusive report by East Week, the sister publication of The Standard, captured a family moment of Yeung and her 5-year-old son Kody at a Tsim Sha Tsui mall.
Despite her substantial income, Yeung carefully checked the price tags of items, ranging from toys to stationery, that Kody picked up.
The pair later paid a visit to the supermarket, where Yeung turned grocery shopping into a math lesson on comparing prices. She concluded their two-hour outing by treating Kody to an HK$10 yogurt.
Although Yeung began her career as a record-setting Miss Hong Kong in 2001, her journey faced challenges due to personal controversies, including having a child with diver Andy Ng Sui following her nine-year relationship with actor Gregory Lee Wing-ho.
However, Yeung has quietly achieved financial success as a mother of two with a mysterious husband, reportedly owning five properties worth over half a billion dollars.
It is understood that the mother maintains a grueling schedule of overnight live-streams in the mainland while ensuring she sends her children off to school after her shifts.
"She would rather not rest than miss time with her children," a friend of hers shared.
In an earlier interview, Yeung opened up about her personal life, revealing the strong support she received from her mother when deciding to have her first daughter after separating from Ng.
She also mentioned that she met her current husband through mutual friends and described him as a dedicated professional based in Hong Kong.
To protect his privacy, Yeung shared only that her husband takes excellent care of their children.
