LEC’s founder Jason Lee knows what it’s like to be an unmotivated teenager who lacks direction. As a former student at one of the most prestigious boys’ schools in Hong Kong, he had committed just about every cardinal sin as a rebellious teenager, from skipping school, making his teacher cry, to almost getting kicked out of school. What turned his life around and continues to motivate him was the unwavering support and guidance he received from teachers after he transferred to a boarding school in the United States. This later inspired him to found his own tutoring and admissions counseling centre which champions a mentorship approach when helping students achieve their academic goals. “It’s important for students or human beings in general to know WHY and HOW they should do things. Just spoon-feeding them with information is not healthy and does not produce results,” says Jason.
With the top schools getting more and more competitive, students too need to have a clear direction when applying to schools. LEC specializes in helping students discover their passions and improve on their unique strengths through counseling and portfolio-building. “Case in point was a student we helped enter Princeton University this year. When he came to LEC, he was already a top IB student with all sorts of extracurricular activities, and yet he lacked a clear career direction. After identifying his interest in biochemistry, we guided him through founding a charitable organization that offers free STEM education at under-resourced schools. The final straw was when we helped him secure a research opportunity under a professor who specializes in DNA. Within 2 years, we were able to transform this student into a DNA researcher whose dream is to provide free STEM education for all, and this kind of determination and worldview are exactly what schools such as Princeton University are looking for in a student.” says Jason.
Much like in admissions counseling, LEC adopts the same mentorship approach in English tutoring. LEC’s philosophy is to instill a sense of purpose in their students, making sure that they understand what their own weaknesses are, what their teachers are looking for, and how they can improve. “People think that English is a very unquantifiable subject, but the truth is, there are clear guidelines for good writing and grammar.” says Jason. However, it is virtually impossible to solely rely on the tutoring sessions to help students achieve excellent results. This is why LEC provides extra help for students outside of class whenever they need it. “If they want ideas on how to outline their essay which is due tomorrow, or a last minute proofread on a research paper, they know we’ll always be there for them.” says Jason.
