Guangdong has reported 2,940 new local cases of Chikungunya fever, a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, in the past week leading up to Saturday (Jul 26).
The distribution of the new cases includes 2,882 in Foshan, 22 in Guangzhou and 18 in Zhongshan, with additional cases reported in nine other cities, according to the provincial public health authorities.
Shenzhen also logged the first case of Chikungunya fever in the past week.
There have been no serious complications or fatalities associated with these cases.
As of Saturday, a total of 4,824 cases of Chikungunya fever have been logged in the current outbreak in Guangdong. Among the cases, 3,224 individuals have successfully recovered and have been released from hospital care or medical observation.
Public health campaigns aimed at combating mosquito populations are currently underway throughout the province to mitigate the further spread of the disease.
