Tickets for these shows sold out quickly, with many attendees arriving to bid farewell to the legendary theater.
Last night (Mar 2), large crowds gathered at the theater entrance and nearby streets, many equipped with cameras and tripods to capture images of the theater’s iconic neon signs and lobby.
Tickets for yesterday's show were sold out, and a sign indicating that the theater was full was displayed at the entrance.
After tonight's final show at 11pm, the theater will officially close its gates at 11.15pm. A significant number of people are expected to gather outside, and arrangements have been made with the police to cordon off certain sections of King's Road.
Many patrons expressed regret over the theater’s closure, noting its importance to Cantonese opera culture and its role as a communal space for older generations to enjoy Cantonese operas. Younger generations will also miss out on experiencing this cultural landmark.
A secondary school student, who is also an opera actor, expressed disappointment at not being able to play a main role at the theater, a dream that will now go unfulfilled.
Another young opera enthusiast noted that although recent shows at the Sunbeam Theatre have incorporated more contemporary themes, which could potentially be transferred to other venues, concerns about ticket prices remain.
However, many longtime fans emphasized that the location was secondary to the performances and the crew, vowing to support them wherever they perform next.
