The United States Postal Service's recent suspension of incoming international parcels from China and Hong Kong will not significantly affect the local business sector, according to Executive Councillor Jeffrey Lam Kin-fung.
The USPS announced on its website that this change, effective Tuesday, will not disrupt the flow of letters.
Lam, who is also a lawmaker from the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong, emphasized that the business sector has been bracing for a potential trade war between the US and China.
He suggested that the US is primarily engaging in political posturing rather than completely halting all parcel deliveries.
“The US Postal Service is just one part of the courier service landscape; businesses have alternative options like DHL,” Lam said.
“I believe this is more about the US expressing its political stance, as I don’t think all courier services are suspended.”
Meanwhile, Li Wing-foo, chairman of the Staff and Workers Union of Hong Kong Civil Airlines, indicated that parcels sent to the US through Hongkong Post on Tuesday might face rejection, while packages delivered via international courier companies may remain unaffected.
