Olympic double gold medalist Quan Hongchan was surrounded by fans during a shopping trip in Macau, leading to online criticism.
A video circulating online showed Quan Hongchan being mobbed by enthusiastic fans while shopping in Macau.
The incident occurred when the Paris Olympic national team delegation visiting Macau for three days. The visit concluded this afternoon with their return to the mainland.
Quan ventured out for some personal time with her teammates the day before, but despite her efforts to disguise herself with a cap and mask, fans recognized her while she was returning to her hotel.
The video captures Quan, dressed casually, and two others briefly running and entering a women's restroom to evade the fans. However, the persistent fans continued to follow them inside.
Security personnel intervened shortly thereafter to restore order and remove the fans, but some remained, blocking the doors and attempting to take photos.
A female staff member, speaking Cantonese, tried to organize the fans into a queue, promising that Quan would take photos with them.
However, the situation remained chaotic due to language barriers until instructions were given in Putonghua, which gradually helped in regaining order.
Additional staff members later arrived to help, forming a human chain to clear a path for Quan, who was then escorted to the lobby.
Even while waiting for the elevator, more fans attempted to approach her. Quan was seen in the elevator calling for help and asking people to make way, ultimately shielded by security guards once again.
Mainland netizens have criticized the behavior of the fans, emphasizing that even in the pursuit of celebrities, it is essential to remain composed and respectful of personal space.
Despite the ordeal, Quan appeared unaffected and continued her visit to the Macau Community Center with the delegation, where she even engaged in playing table tennis with local residents.
