Hong Kong’s sports enthusiasts braved the rainy weather on Wednesday morning to cheer members of the city’s Paris Olympic team during an open-top bus parade to welcome back the athletes.
Aboard the two open-roofed double-decker buses included Hong Kong’s fencing gold medalist Vivian Kong Man-wai, and two-time swimming bronze medal winner Siobhán Bernadette Haughey.
Other athletes include members of the swimming team and table tennis pair of Doo Hoi-kem and Wong Chun-ting. They waved to fans who lined the streets near the Tai Wai MTR station this morning.
At 10.15 am the buses have started to snake along the streets of Hong Kong, starting from the Hong Kong Sports Institute in Sha Tin and will end its route at 11.45 in Tamar Park, Admiralty.
The three "best viewing locations" for the parade are Tai Wai MTR station in the New Territories, Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower in Kowloon and Central Star Ferry Pier on Hong Kong Island, according to the government.
The buses left Hong Kong Sports Institute at around 10.15am and passed Tai Wai station at around 10.30am, before heading toward Tsim Sha Tsui, arriving at the Clock Tower at around 11am.
And then it will be through the Cross Harbour Tunnel in Hung Hom and Queen's Road Central before reaching the Central Star Ferry Pier at around 11.35 am and Tamar Park 10 minutes later.
The athletes will share their Olympic experience with students at Tamar Park.
Many of the sports fans, who were watching the parade in Tai Wai, told reporters that they were proud of the Hong Kong athletes.
Some also called on authorities to organize more meet-and-greets involving the city’s athletes.
