A 93-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing a pigeon in a cruel manner using a cane in Wah Kwai Estate in Aberdeen.
A concerned citizen witnessed the elderly man viciously beating the pigeon on August 5 and immediately reported the incident to the police.
Animal rights group "Hong Kong Pigeon and Dove Rescue" was also informed and provided video footage taken from the citizen's dashcam to the authorities.
After investigation, police arrested the 93-year-old man, surnamed Ng, on suspicion of animal abuse. He has been released on bail and is required to report back to the police in early September.
Cruelty to animals is a serious offense in Hong Kong, with a maximum penalty of three years in prison under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance.
