Kong won the final in sudden-death overtime by 13-12, as she made a dramatic comeback after falling behind at 1-7 and taking the city’s first Épée fencing gold and third gold medal ever in the Olympics.
"I just thought I was going to lose but I didn't want it to be so badly so I just tried to enjoy the stage," the world number one said of fighting back from a six-point deficit.
The 30-year-old fencer was in top form throughout the day, as she won every bout on her road to the finals.
Earlier in the day, Kong brushed aside Egypt’s Aya Hussein 15-11 in the round of 32, followed by another 15-12 win against USA’s Hadley Husisian in the round of 16.
The quarterfinal match against Olena Kryvytska of Ukraine was easier as she routed her opponent 15-7 and advanced to the semis, which she won 15-11 against Estonian Nelli Differt.
