The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Business School announced on Tuesday that they have begun an investigation into suspected admission applications involving fake documents.
This came after a rumor went viral online on the Chinese social media site Xiaohongshu that there were some research students who had falsified their academic qualifications and were requesting to resubmit them.
The school responded to the inquiries confirming the said rumors and stated that they had previously discovered that there were a small number of students who had submitted false documents when applying for the school and have already taken action, along with opening a full-scale investigation into the issue.
They said if sufficient evidence of foul play is found, they will take action by deprivation of qualification admissions and cancellation of student registration, and they will also cooperate with relevant law enforcement agencies to pursue the intermediaries involved.
The Education Bureau responded that UGC-funded universities have extensive experience in processing admission applications, have rigorous procedures for reviewing applications with different academic qualifications or backgrounds to select the best students, and will never tolerate dishonesty or misconduct.
The university will take disciplinary action for any misconduct during the admission application process in accordance with the established mechanisms and will report suspected violations to law enforcement agencies.
According to online rumors, some masters degree students were suspected of plagiarizing homework and committing disciplinary violations, which aroused the school's suspicion and required the relevant students to submit their transcripts.
However, the relevant students failed to submit them in time, and the school decided to launch an investigation and expand the scope of the investigation to the entire college.
