A voltage dip was recorded in CLP Power’s 400kV power system in Tuen Mun on Saturday afternoon, leading to over 120 elevator incidents in Kowloon and New Territories.
At least 122 reports regarding citizens being trapped in elevators were received by the Fire Services Department between 1.30 pm and 2 pm, as well as some 40 reports about malfunctioning fire alarms.
The Fire Services Department reminded the public to stay calm and said they are now conducting rescue operations and handling the incidents.
CLP Power said there was no interruption to the power supply during the voltage dip.
The power giant noted that some customers might have observed light flickering or dimming during the period and fire alarms might have been triggered.
“Some electrical installations which are sensitive to voltage fluctuation such as lifts might experience tripping due to activation of the equipment’s protection mechanism,” CLP said.
“Building managers can seek assistance from qualified elevator engineering personnel to restart these devices.”
Around 12.30 pm last Saturday, a brief voltage dip of less than 0.1 second was recorded in the 400kV overhead power supply system connecting Yuen Long and Lai Chi Kok, suspectedly affected by the wildfire in Shap Pat Heung.
CLP was subsequently requested by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department to submit an investigation report within four weeks.
