Fatal Kennedy Town fire deemed suspicious

A fire broke out in Kennedy Town on Sunday, leaving a 76-year-old man dead. Firefighters’ initial investigation found the blaze suspicious.

The fire was reported to authorities at around 7.30 pm yesterday, with some 200 people forced to evacuate the building at Smithfield Terrace on Smithfield.

The Fire Services Department deployed one breathing apparatus team and used one jet to put out the blaze which took about 40 minutes.

It is understood that the man was found dead inside the charred unit, where a charwood stove was also discovered.

Firefighters deemed the fire suspicious and police were now investigating.
