The SAR government has approved on Friday five applications under the Disaster Relief Fund to donate about HK$33 million in support of Gansu which was recently hit by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu wrote on Facebook that he knows all sectors of Hong Kong have also been donating to the mainland to aid search and rescue.

He said he is touched by citizens’ kindness which amplifies the close connection between Hong Kong and the mainland as well as the spirit of riding through the storms on the same boat.

“The government expresses its deep sympathy to the mainland compatriots affected by the disaster,” a spokesman said.

“The government has promptly processed, in consultation with the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee, the disaster relief funding applications from five organizations under the Disaster Relief Fund, and informed the organizations concerned of the in-principle approval given for grants totaling about HK$33 million,” he added.

The five organizations are Amity Foundation, Hong Kong; The HKFTU Disasters Relief Charity Fund; HK United Youth Exchange Foundation; Hong Kong Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations Charitable Foundation; and Oxfam Hong Kong.

The spokesman also said that the government will continue to closely monitor the disaster situation and related assistance work, and process any subsequent Disaster Relief Fund applications from other organizations in a timely manner.
