Fong, a veteran professional accountant, was first appointed to the HKMU Council in 2003 and served as the Chairman of the Council from 2009 to 2016.
Commenting on the appointment, the city’s education chief Christine Choi Yuk-lin said Fong has been devoted to public services and has been making significant contributions to leading the HKMU to sustainably develop into a full-fledged comprehensive university.
“I am confident that with his wealth of experience, Dr Fong will lead the HKMU Court in continuing to provide invaluable advice for the HKMU's long-term development," she said.
The education chief also paid tribute to Charles Lee Yeh-kwong, the outgoing Pro-Chancellor of the HKMU.
“The HKMU's significant achievements over the years owe much to Dr Lee's contributions," said Choi.
