A whale was once again spotted in Hong Kong waters on Monday, with a video uploaded online showing the mammal bobbing up and down near the water's surface.
Police said they received a report at 9.06 a.m. this morning that an injured “dolphin” was spotted in the waters 500 meters off a beach in the Southern District, with their investigation later revealed that the “dolphin” was a type of whale.
It is understood that the whale dived down when police officers, along with officials from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and Ocean Park, arrived in vessels.
The personnel are currently tracking the whale and providing the mammal with protection as far as possible.
Ken Ching, Chairman and Founder of Eco-Education and Resources Centre, said it is difficult to identify the type of whale, but he said the mammal could most likely be a pilot whale or a false killer whale.
He added that the chance of the whale being a dwarf sperm whale is very slim.
Meanwhile, the expert called on citizens not to go on boat trips for whale watching and urged authorities to formulate plans to deal with this sighting.
In July, a young Bryde's whale that has been in waters off Sai Kung since the middle of the month was found floating dead off Shelter Island after being hit by a propeller. Authorities were also under fire for not reacting in time to prevent citizens from going on whale-watching expeditions.
