Hong Kong’s deputies to the country’s legislature, the National People’s Congress, had a mini-makeover on Thursday with 21 new faces elected to its ranks, while renowned neuroscientist Nancy Ip Yuk-yu secured the most votes.

A total of 42 candidates ran in the election to be among the chosen 36 delegates who represent the city in the legislature. The representatives were chosen by around 1,273 voters from the city’s Election Committee.
All 15 incumbents seeking another term retained their seats, including Hong Kong University of Science and Technology president Ip, who secured the most votes of 1,254 from the 1,273 ballots handed out and was crowned “Queen of Votes” - the most popular woman candidate.
Meanwhile, first-timer Kenneth Fok Kai-kong, a legislator and the Hong Kong Olympic Committee vice-president, was crowned “King of Votes” with 1,248 votes.
The city’s former Secretary for Transport and Housing Frank Chan Fan and ex-chief information officer Allen Yeung Tak-bun, are also among the fresh faces elected. Chan and Yeung received 1,206 votes and 1,155 votes respectively.
Several lawmakers also won, including DAB chairwoman Starry Lee Wai-king, Priscilla Leung Mei-fun, Ronick Chan Chun-ying, Kennedy Wong Ying-ho, Rock Chen Chung-nin and Jimmy Ng Wing-ka.
The six candidates who lost were Tse Oi-hung, vice-president of the Federation of Trade Unions, watchmaker William Shum Wai-lam, 37, and Andrew Fan Chun-wah, son of former NPC Standing Committee member Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai.
The 36 Hong Kong deputies will attend the annual sitting of the National People’s Congress, usually held in March.
