Wong Yuen-cheung, the leader of the Hong Kong branch of the Federation for a Democratic China, is being investigated by police over activities endangering national security, according to Ta Kung Pao.
The group was founded on September 22, 1989 in Paris, France. Its members comprised of June 4, 1989 former student leaders who fled China, as well as Chinese students who were studying aboard.
The report said that police have requested Wong hand over information on its assets and activities it organized so as to detect and prevent any activities that endanger national security.
Ta Kung Pao said subverting the state is one of the organization's goals and it has been colluding with foreign forces to organize anti-China protests.
The report added that the federation cooperates with organizations like the Civil Human Rights Front and the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movement of China, and holds assemblies across the world that incite hatred toward the Chinese Communist Party “in June every year.”
It also pointed out that the federation remains active at the “international battlefront” after the national security law was imposed. Examples include its US branch continuing to upload online content that advocates Hong Kong independence and portrays the CCP in a negative light, such as calling on people to refer to Covid-19 as the “CCP virus” and publishing radicalized articles on democracy.
One of the group's manifesto is “End one-party rule, build a democratic China.”
According to Ta Kung Pao, Wong is in charge of the Hong Kong branch and is a council member at its headquarters.
