Hong Kong-Singapore ‘travel bubble’ to be announced Monday

The government is set to announce details of the “air travel bubble” between Hong Kong and Singapore next Monday at the earliest, after the announcement planned for today has been called off, with reports suggesting the cancellation was initiated by the Singapore side.

Tourism sector lawmaker Yiu Si-wing told a radio program today that the epidemic in both Hong Kong and Singapore has been brought under control, which he believes it is possible the “travel bubble” arrangement could commence next month.

The government earlier announced that those who were fully vaccinated - that is having received both doses of the Covid vaccine and waited 14 days for antibodies to develop - can participate in the “travel bubble.”

Meanwhile, infectious disease expert Dr Leung Chi-chiu said it is best to hold off the announcement for two weeks.

“The untraceable cases recorded in Hong Kong for the past week is more than double than in the previous week. Getting fully vaccinated does not mean people are 100 percent protected.” Leung said.

He added that authorities should wait two weeks to closely observe if the city’s epidemic is indeed on a stable downward trend.
