Lam wrote in his blog on Saturday that the new crossing facilities, including yellow stripes on the roads and pedestrian traffic lights, will allow citizens to walk a shorter distance and to save time.
Lam added that the second diagonal pedestrian crossing is expected to be launched at the intersection between Carnarvon Road and Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui in mid-2024.
These two intersections were selected for the pilot scheme because the Transport Department observed that many citizens have been crossing the roads there diagonally already.
After considering the flow of vehicles and pedestrians as well as relevant traffic lights equipment, the department found these two spots both the appropriate pilot choices.
Following the implementation of the scheme, the department will closely monitor the efficiency and collect opinions from pedestrians and drivers to review if the design has to be further enhanced, Lam also said.
