The ICAC confirmed on Friday they are conducting an investigation into a medical research center at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which sources say is run by Cecilia Lo Wen-ya, the wife of the university’s president Rocky Tuan Sung-chi.
The investigation stemmed from “alleged corruption, misconduct in public office and misappropriation in connection with the center’s funding arrangements and operation,” an ICAC spokesperson said.
ICAC officers conducted an investigation and collected evidence at the CUHK yesterday (Fri), including holding interviews and searching premises in accordance with warrants issued by the court.
“No arrest has been made at this stage. As enquiries are ongoing, no further comment will be made,” the spokesperson said.
Sources said the institution involved is the Centre for Cardiovascular Genomics and Medicine and Lo is the center’s director.
The center, opened in 2018, was granted HK$10 million funding from the CUHK Vice-Chancellor Discretionary Fund by former CUHK president Joseph Sung Jao-yiu, and received another HK$20 million from the Lui Che Woo Institute of Innovative Medicine.
Lo is also a visiting professor for the university’s Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, and the Department of Paediatrics.
The CUHK Medical Centre issued a statement late last night and said the matter is not related to CUHKMC, and CUHK Medical Clinic.
