The Harbour School (THS) is an international school in Hong Kong serving students from Junior Grade 1 to Grade 12. We recognize children as complex individuals with unique needs, goals, personalities, and backgrounds, which informs our personalized approach to learning.
Founded in 2007, THS is a leader in progressive education in Hong Kong, emphasizing essential skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, innovation, and resilience. We offer a U.S. Common Core curriculum that is adapted to promote learning success for our diverse international population. At THS, we believe that “The Learning Experience Comes First.” With two campuses, students engage in experiential learning through experimentation, project work, discussions, and hands-on activities. We also provide a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses for high school students, offering opportunities to earn college credit and prepare for future academic success.
Experiential Learning
Beyond a structured approach to math, reading, and writing, we employ an experiential method in subjects like science, history, and the arts. Students at THS actively learn through experimentation, project work, and discussion. Our small teacher-to-student ratio (1:8) allows for customized instruction tailored to each child’s abilities and skills. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum to help students learn, communicate, and produce at their highest potential. Our facilities include a Marine Science Centre, a Foundry (maker space), and The Black Dolphin, a 50-foot sailboat used as an outdoor classroom, all enhancing our commitment to interactive experiential learning.
Personal Approach to Learning
At THS, we tailor instruction based on each student’s academic strengths and weaknesses while promoting individual interests through structured independent projects. We challenge students at all levels to think critically and employ hands-on, problem-solving approaches. This requires meticulous planning, monitoring, assessment, and documentation of student needs, strengths, and interests. We identify and support any difficulties, and academically advanced students receive learning extensions. The learning process is consistently reinforced through experiential and active learning methods.
