Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compared Cristiano Ronaldo's influence at Manchester United to NBA legend Michael Jordan's on the Chicago Bulls after he scored twice to salvage a 2-2 draw at Atalanta.
For the third time in four Champions League games since returning to Old Trafford, Ronaldo rescued United with a late goal as his 91st-minute volley snatched a barely deserved point.
The 36-year-old also scored late winners at home to Villarreal and Atalanta, when United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 two weeks ago.
However, another disjointed display bailed out by Ronaldo's brilliant finishing and Solskjaer's stirring talk will do little to ease the pressure on the United boss.
"Ronaldo is one of the best that's ever played," Solskjaer said. "I'm sure this is the same feeling Chicago Bulls got with Michael Jordan.
"If you want the ball to fall to someone in the last minute, Cristiano is the one."
Solskjaer's switch to a back three for a 3-0 win at Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday resulted in much-needed defensive solidity after a 5-0 thrashing at home to Liverpool. But that was followed by Atalanta exposing United's flaws.
David de Gea let a Josip Ilicic shot squirm under him for Atalanta's opener, and Duvan Zapata made it 2-1 just 11 minutes into the second half, with Ronaldo having equalized right on the break.
Elsewhere, Juventus and Bayern Munich secured qualification for the last 16.
Paulo Dybala's brace helped Juventus to a 4-2 win over Zenit Saint Petersburg in Turin to maintain a 100-percent record in Group H while Robert Lewandowski netted a hat-trick as Bayern beat Benfica 5-2 in Germany to make it four wins from four games in Group E.
Juve are three points clear of Chelsea, who beat Malmo 1-0 in Sweden with a Hakim Ziyech goal.
And managerless Barcelona boosted their qualification hopes in Ukraine, with Ansu Fati firing them to a 1-0 win over Dynamo Kiev.
