Nearly 90 percent of adults in Hong Kong have experienced spinal pain in the past year, particularly among white-collar workers, according to a recent survey.
Wong Yat-wa, honorary consultant in orthopedic surgery at the hospital, said that prolonged sitting in the same posture increases the likelihood of back and neck pain among white-collar workers.
Wong also said lifestyle changes, such as engaging in moderate exercise, adjusting the heights of desks and chairs, and reducing strain on the Achilles tendon, can protect spinal health.
"If anyone suspects they have a serious medical condition, they should seek medical advice promptly," he added. The survey revealed that 40 percent of respondents attributed their spinal issues to degeneration, including bone spurs, degenerated or protruded discs, and spinal stenosis.
Stephen Wu Wing-cheung, head of the department of orthopedics and traumatology, said aging is a primary cause of spinal problems. He advised people to quit smoking and maintain a healthy weight to mitigate the risk of spinal issues.
However, Wu cautioned against excessive exercise, which has become common with the rise of gym culture, saying it can can lead to spinal problems.Joseph Chan Woon-tong, deputy medical superintendent, announced plans to establish a spine center to offer personalized treatment and rehabilitation.
"Addressing spinal problems requires a multidisciplinary approach, and the spine center will facilitate consultations across various specialties, including neurology, rehabilitation, and physiotherapy," Chan said.He added that the center will collaborate with orthopedic professors from the University of Hong Kong's medical school on clinical consultations and research into complex spinal disorders and advanced treatment technologies, aiming to enhance effective patient recovery.
