Opening in Hong Kong cinemas on March 12, the film is adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed 2020 novel, offering a fictional interpretation of the playwright’s life and the personal loss believed to have inspired Hamlet.
Set in 16th-century England during the Black Plague, the film blends historical fact with imaginative storytelling. Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway, had three children, including their son Hamnet, who died at a young age — a loss that has long intrigued historians and literary scholars.
The film’s synopsis describes the story as “the powerful love story that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.”
Zhao, whose earlier films include Nomadland and Eternals, directs the project and co-wrote the screenplay with O’Farrell. The film also marks Zhao’s first release since her 2021 Marvel production Eternals.

Behind the scenes, the production brings together a strong creative team. Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg are among the film’s producers, while the cast features Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn in key supporting roles.
For O’Farrell, the adaptation represents a deeply personal collaboration. Reflecting on the filmmaking process, she wrote on Instagram last August, “I loved working on this film – Chloé and I wrote the screenplay together – and I can’t wait for it to be out in the world.”
She added: “It’s a beauty, from start to finish.”
Through Zhao’s contemplative style, Hamnet transforms historical fiction into an intimate meditation on family, loss and creative legacy. The film traces the emotional landscape behind Shakespeare’s writing, connecting a private tragedy to a work that has resonated across centuries.
By placing personal grief at the heart of artistic creation, Zhao’s latest film invites audiences to consider the fragile line between life and literature — and how love and loss can echo through time.
