The inaugural World University Animation Awards took center stage in Hong Kong on September 16, 2025, hosted by Hong Kong Metropolitan University at The Box, Freespace, in the West Kowloon Cultural District. The event attracted an impressive 1,763 animated short film entries from students at hundreds of universities across 96 countries, making it one of the most globally inclusive celebrations of emerging animation talent ever held in the region.
The awards aim to promote creative dialogue and elevate Hong Kong’s reputation as a leading international center for artistic innovation and education.
Finalists enjoyed a fully funded experience that covered travel, accommodation, and a program of masterclasses, expert forums, screenings, networking events, and city tours. These activities provided unique opportunities to exchange ideas, build cross-cultural connections, and engage with the vibrant creative scene that characterizes Hong Kong’s contemporary arts landscape. Many young animators remarked that the experience was transformative, equipping them with practical skills and inspiration for their future projects.
The judging panel comprised acclaimed animation professionals and educators from Asia, Europe, and North America.
Six main awards were bestowed. The Grand Prize was awarded to “The Shyness of Trees” from France; the Best Artistic Award went to China’s “Urban Duo;” the Best Narrative Award was given to Switzerland’s “Tapir Memories;” and the Jury’s Award was presented to Ecuador’s “Still Here.” Chan Ka-lam received the Hong Kong Next Generation Award for “Pink Pupil,” while Yeung Hoi-lam was honored with the HKMU Special Talent Award for “My Friend’s Last Wishes.”
In addition, the Rainbow Horizon Award recognized outstanding animators from countries such as Uruguay, Sri Lanka, Morocco, and Moldova, who demonstrated exceptional creativity and potential.
Beyond the accolades and prizes, the WUAA has been widely recognized as an important new platform for the animation industry and creative education in Hong Kong. By bringing together students and experts from across the world, the awards have established the foundation for ongoing artistic collaboration and cultural exchange.
Hong Kong’s growing reputation as a center for creative education is now further strengthened, with the WUAA acting as a beacon for future generations of animators.
