Nearly 40 writers out of 3,000 candidates were honored for their exceptional essays in the 4th "Love Is All Around" Hong Kong Essay-Writing Competition.
They shared personal stories and displayed remarkable courage in confronting their personal pain head on.
The competition, organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Journalists and generously sponsored by the Lu and Marisa Charitable Foundation, received enthusiastic support from the government. Participants were challenged to explore how life's trials and tribulations could be transformed into motivation for overcoming adversity.
Across the three categories of the competition - primary school pupils, secondary school students, and the public - a staggering 3,000 submissions were received.
Thirteen awardees were selected from each category, including the winner, first runner-up, second runner-up and 10 merit award recipients. The winner of the competition was bestowed with a prestigious prize of HK$30,000.
In an award ceremony last Thursday, federation chairman Li Dahong said the competition's objective was aimed at motivating Hongkongers, especially the younger generation, to cultivate a habit of writing.
He urged participants to use words to illustrate that love can be found in every corner of Hong Kong.
"Pain is an inevitable part of daily life and plays a significant role in personal growth. Embrace every obstacle with a positive mindset," Li said.
Jasper Tsang Yok-sing, the honorary director of the competition's organizing committee, said people perceive pain differently at various stages of life.
He believed that such pain can be transformative, teaching valuable lessons and augmenting wisdom.
Tsang cited the profound impact of writing and sharing thoughts, saying, "Writing and sharing our thoughts can benefit others, which is a fantastic thing."
For Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak Mei-kuen, the competition's value is immeasurable.
She commended its positive influence on society, saying participants' stories of transforming pain into a guiding force had spread positive energy.
Mak underlined the significance of youth development, saying the competition served as a powerful platform for the city's future leaders.
Mak's bureau had outlined a comprehensive youth development blueprint in 2022, which sets forth the vision and guiding principles for the government's initiatives. Over 160 measures will be implemented to support youth development.
Mak pledged the bureau's unwavering commitment to building a harmonious and loving society. She also reaffirmed the government's deep regard for the youth of Hong Kong and its dedication to their growth and welfare.
