Hollywood Road has earned the prestigious title of being the second most stylish street in the world, according to British magazine Time Out.
Constructed in 1884, it was the second road to be built when Hong Kong was established as a colony, following Queen’s Road Central.
The historic street is adorned with two groups of declared monuments: the Central Police Station Compound, consisting of the former Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison, and the Man Mo Temple Compound, comprised of the Man Mo Temple, Lit Shing Kung and Kung Sor blocks.
Known for its antique shops and architectural heritage, Hollywood Road has always been a beloved destination for both locals and tourists. Tatum Ancheta, editor-in- chief of Time Out Hong Kong, explained why Hollywood Road stood out, saying, “It represents exactly what we think makes a street cool. It has a long history but is still constantly changing and offering something new.” Ancheta further described the street as “that wise old friend who’s seen it all but still knows how to rock it.”
Hollywood Road not only boasts high-quality dining options, including Michelin-starred restaurants and trendy new bars, but also is a vibrant art hub.
Ancheta says the presence of antique shops, art galleries and Instagram-worthy murals, particularly during Arts Month in March, is what makes the street come alive.
Time Out chose Hollywood Road for its rich historical value and ever-changing atmosphere, allowing people to enjoy a diverse range of art, dining and retail experiences.
Hollywood Road’s preexisting history suggests that it predates Los Angeles’ famous entertainment district, with its name possibly derived from holly bushes that once lined its edges.
The magazine called Hollywood Road “a treasure trove of antiques, a culinary hotspot home to the city’s best bars and restaurants and a hub for the arts, with murals, installations and galleries around every corner.”
Annual rankings are compiled based on local polls conducted among readers worldwide, who provide feedback on local restaurants, bars, nightlife and social activities.
The results are then combined with input from local magazine editors for the final rankings. In 2022, Sheung Wan’s Tai Ping Shan Street made its debut on the list, ranking seventh.
Hong Kong has once again secured a place in the top three coolest streets worldwide, marking its presence for the second consecutive year.
This year’s rankings saw High Street in Melbourne, Australia, claim first, with East Eleventh in Austin, Texas securing the third spot.
