A 26-year-old construction worker died after accidentally falling from the overhang outside the window of his Sai Wan flat during a reported attempt to retrieve his wireless earphones.
A passerby called the police in the early hours of yesterday upon discovering the man, Fan, covered in blood and unconscious on Eastern Street.
He was taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam where he was certified dead.
Preliminary investigations found the man had fallen from his fifth-floor flat, where he lived with his older brother, sister-in-law and nephew.
Officers searched Fan's bedroom, where they discovered a smart phone showing an ongoing online game and an empty AirPod container. They subsequently found the earphones on the overhang outside the window of his room.
Officers believe Fan was wearing the earphones when playing the game before accidentally dropping the earphones out the window. They added that Fan likely climbed outside in a bid to retrieve them but slipped and fell.
It is understood Fan was married, with his wife based in the mainland.
In another tragedy on the same day, a mother and son, both unemployed, died in a suspected suicide pact at their Tung Chung home.
Their bodies were found by the husband, who visited his wife, 55, and son, 30, at around 1pm but found them unconscious in the bedroom.
Officers later found a pack of charcoal in the unit, along with a suicide note written on the back of a calendar.
Chong Kwan-wai, assistant commander of Lantau district, said it is likely that unemployment and debts prompted the suicide pact.
