Sunny Tan, the textiles and garment sector's representative in the Legislative Council, has brought about a shift in party strength in the chamber by joining the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong.
Becoming the alliance's eighth member in the chamber means it now tops the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions to be the second biggest party in the legislature, the No 1 being the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong.
The federation now has seven legislators, having seen Alice Mak Mei-kuen join the administration as secretary for home and youth affairs.
Tan explained: "I felt the support of the Business and Professionals Alliance deeply during my past six months in the legislature.
"I campaigned for relaxation measures with the alliance during the sixth Covid wave and achieved great results. The alliance's vision aligns with my own."
Alliance member Jeffrey Lam Kin-fung, who also serves as a non-official member of the Executive Council, welcomed the new arrival, noting: "I've worked with Tan for a long time, from his time as vice-chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries to chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council."
