Leung Shek Chee College has told parents that the teacher, surnamed Chiu, "has resigned over inappropriate behavior."
The scandal came to light in a post by a student on Instagram page "nss.secrets" two days ago. She said she had heard from Secondary One schoolmates that Chiu had watched porn on his mobile phone during dictation lessons in a Secondary One class.
But he was unaware he accidentally shared the screen of his phone to the projector and the indecent video was played on the blackboard for five minutes.
The post said some students even found the teacher was excited by the porn and covered his crotch with books when leaving the classroom.
The student said after the teacher found out about his mistake, he asked his students not to discuss it online or on public platforms so as not to affect the school's reputation.
"This teacher had always switched off the camera when we had Zoom classes," the student said. "Don't know if he was doing the same thing.
"Many seniors have said it's not the first time he has watched porn during class. The school knows about it but failed to handle it seriously," she said, adding the school had only told the students not to tell others about the scandal.
"Sexual harassment can be something serious. I don't understand why the school is banning us from talking about it. Is it because of the school's image so it won't affect our reputation? "This is something about our students' safety. We should not turn a blind eye to it!"
Some of the students had told their parents.
The school subsequently sent a notice to parents saying: "A certain teacher has resigned over inappropriate behavior," adding that the incident had been reported to the Education Bureau. The school refused to further comment on the incident citing privacy issues. an
The bureau confirmed it has received complaints about a secondary school teacher watching aporn in class, adding the school has been instructed to conduct an investigation.
"The Education Bureau has been handling alleged misconduct cases in a serious and strict manner. The bureau will closely follow up on the cases despite the teacher has resigned," a spokesman said.
Many parents were worried that the school was trying to hush up the scandal, which could allow the teacher to run free or be hired by another school.
Netizens praised the student for exposing the scandal and called on the bureau to address the issue stringently.
