Officers from the Hong Kong Island traffic division and the Central district traffic team conducted a joint operation on Friday targeting illegal taxi practices. During the crackdown, authorities identified two non-compliant vehicles and announced plans to issue court summonses to two male drivers, aged 69 and 31.
The two taxis were intercepted on Garden Road and Wyndham Street. The drivers are accused of several infractions, including failing to display their taxi meter indicators to obscure their availability and neglecting to place their driver identity plates in the designated holders.
Additionally, they were cited for violating public service vehicle regulations concerning driver appearance and grooming. Both taxis were found to have mechanical defects and were subsequently towed away for further inspection.
The Garden Road interception took place at around 7pm yesterday outside the Peak Tram station in Admiralty.
Police observed a taxi allegedly monopolizing the front of the taxi stand while hiding its meter indicator to selectively choose passengers. This behavior actively prevented other taxis from entering the stand to pick up waiting commuters.
Officers intercepted the vehicle and ticketed the 69-year-old driver at the scene. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that this particular driver has a documented history of repeatedly overcharging passengers.
