Customs seized 10 live turtles, suspected to be an endangered species and worth around HK$26,000, from an inbound air consignment at Hong Kong International Airport.
Officers on Sunday (Jun 28) intercepted the consignment declared to contain a stuffed cushion and a decorative throw imported from the United States to Hong Kong. Upon inspection, they found the live turtles concealed inside socks within a carton box.
Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, those who import, export or possess specimens of endangered species not in accordance with the Ordinance will be liable to a maximum fine of HK$10 million and imprisonment for 10 years upon conviction, with the specimens forfeited.
