Woman's body found after air conditioner fire at Tung Chung estate

An elderly woman's body was found inside a flat at Tung Chung after a fire believed to have been caused by an air conditioner early on Friday, with sources saying the unit was filled with clutter that hampered rescue efforts.

Police and firefighters received multiple reports around 4.43am that smoke was coming from a unit at Hei Tung House, Yu Tung Court. Firefighters arrived and deployed one hose line and one breathing apparatus team to extinguish the blaze, with several residents evacuated.

According to sources, the woman lived alone and had a habit of collecting clutter. She had previously piled items both inside her flat and in the corridor, causing odour and hygiene concerns. Social workers had intervened, leading to some improvement and the removal of items from the corridor. However, at the time of the fire, the unit remained filled with clutter, making entry and search efforts difficult.

Fire services and police are investigating.
