Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan said on a radio program today that fuel prices in Hong Kong remain determined by market forces.
The government is collecting data and plans to start publishing weekly figures from April 1 showing discounted retail prices per station and global refined oil prices.
This will allow the public to track changes and detect cases where prices rise quickly but fall slowly, or increase more than they decrease.
Tse emphasized Hong Kong’s stable supply thanks to special support from the mainland, which provides most fuel, including 100 percent of diesel.
He noted supplies stayed steady during the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict despite global crises, and recent Middle East tensions have not disrupted them.
Authorities have contacted all energy companies to confirm stability.
The Environment and Ecology Bureau added that major suppliers, after a meeting this week, reported only moderate local price rises compared with sharp international surges and increases elsewhere.
The government will keep monitoring geopolitical events and global fuel trends to safeguard energy security.
