A dashcam video has emerged showing the terrifying moment a private car mounted the pavement and ploughed into pedestrians in Kowloon Bay on Monday lunchtime, leaving nine injured.
The 57-second clip, circulating online, captures the incident on Lam Hing Street near the Metro Centre. Several people were gathered around a temporary stall at the junction when a Mercedes suddenly veered onto the pavement, narrowly missing those at the stall but striking multiple pedestrians, sending them flying. The vehicle continued forward before a loud crash was heard.
After the impact, the car came to a stop in the middle of the road with front-end damage. Several victims lay on the ground but remained conscious as bystanders rushed to help. The dashcam's occupants were heard exclaiming in shock.
The accident occurred around noon when the car, driven by a 75-year-old man surnamed Kwok, mounted the pavement and hit eight people. A 70-year-old female passenger, surnamed Lam, was thrown from the vehicle, reportedly due to not wearing a seatbelt.
Police arrested the driver, who has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. The case will be heard at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts on March 25. Initial investigations suggest the driver mistook the accelerator for the brake while making a U-turn.
