Major roads linking Kowloon and the western New Territories will be closed early Sunday morning as thousands of cyclists take part in this year’s Cycle for Millions, police said.
The event is scheduled to begin at 7am on Sunday, with the race route covering key sections of Tsing Sha Highway, Nam Wan Tunnel, Ting Kau Bridge and Stonecutters Bridge. Authorities expect around 4,000 cyclists to participate.
Police said road closures will begin gradually from 1am on the day of the event.
Affected sections include the Tsing Long Highway heading toward Kowloon via Ting Kau Bridge, as well as both directions of Tsing Sha Highway between Lai Chi Kok and the Lantau Link.
Traffic restrictions will also apply near the Tai Lam Tunnel exit on Tsing Long Highway toward Kowloon, where vehicles will not be allowed to travel toward Ting Kau Bridge. Vehicles using the Tuen Mun Road slip road heading toward Kowloon will also be barred from entering the bridge.
Meanwhile, vehicles traveling from the Tsing Ma Bridge toward Kowloon on the Lantau Link and those exiting Eagle’s Nest Tunnel toward Kowloon will not be permitted to access Tsing Sha Highway.
On the Kowloon side, the slip road from West Kowloon Highway to Tsing Sha Highway will also be closed. Drivers heading to Tsing Yi or Hong Kong International Airport are advised to use Tsing Kwai Highway and Cheung Tsing Tunnel instead.
Police said road reopening will depend on the progress of the event and the clearing of the race route. Authorities expect roads to reopen in two phases starting at around 11am and again at about 1pm.
Additional traffic control measures will be implemented near the event venue in Tsing Yi, particularly along Tsing Hong Road, Tsing Yi Road and Sai Shan Road near Mayfair Gardens. Unauthorized vehicles will not be allowed to stop for passenger pick-up or drop-off in these areas.
Road closures in those locations will begin from 8pm the evening before the event.
Organizers have distributed vehicle access permits to residents of nearby housing estates, allowing drivers with valid permits to enter the restricted areas during the road closures.
Police urged participants to use public transportation or shuttle buses arranged by the organizers, which will operate from MTR Kwai Fong Station, Tsuen Wan West Station and Tsing Yi Station to the event venue.
Participants are also advised to prepare their registration passes in advance for inspection by event staff to help reduce waiting time at entry points.
