A 28-year-old mainland Chinese man smashed a window on a Citybus in busy North Point during evening rush hour on Friday night, then tried to drive it away, resulting in the bus rolling backward and colliding with a KMB bus behind it.
A dramatic incident unfolded in North Point yesterday at around 6.40pm when a Citybus Route 116 traveling along King's Road toward Quarry Bay was targeted.
A male passenger used the onboard emergency hammer to shatter an upper-deck window near Tai Hong Street.
The 54-year-old driver stopped the bus, activated the hazard lights, and went upstairs to check the damage while evacuating passengers.
The suspect, identified as a 28-year-old mainland man holding a two-way permit, rushed to the driver's seat during the distraction.
The driver returned quickly, removed the key to stop the vehicle, and exited to call police. The man fiddled with controls and released the handbrake, causing the bus to roll backward and crash into a Route 102 KMB bus following behind.
After the collision, the suspect climbed back upstairs and jumped out through the broken window, fleeing toward Power Street.
The driver pursued him, and the police arrested the man nearby outside an HSBC branch.
He appeared incoherent and dazed, with blood on his hands, and a bottle of suspected medication was found at the scene.
The arrested man claimed to have HIV, and due to physical contact during the struggle, the Citybus driver was sent to Eastern Hospital for checks. The suspect, injured, was also taken to the hospital under police guard.
He faces charges of criminal damage, taking a conveyance without authority, driving without a license, and driving without third-party insurance.
Citybus condemned the vandalism of public transport and pledged full cooperation with the investigation while offering support to affected passengers and staff. No other passengers were injured in the incident.
