The father of wanted fugitive Anna Kwok Fung-yee, who is wanted by the National Security Department, was sentenced to eight months in prison on Thursday for attempting to handle his daughter’s insurance policy.
Kwok Yin-sang, 63, had been accused of trying to cancel an insurance policy he had purchased for his daughter and withdraw the remaining balance. He was convicted under the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance for attempting to deal with the funds or property of a specified absconder.
He was escorted to West Kowloon Court in a prison van this morning for sentencing.
Acting Principal Magistrate Cheng Lim-chi said the defendant had twice handled documents within two months in an attempt to obtain payment and had impersonated the fugitive by signing on her behalf.
The magistrate described the nature of the offense as serious and set nine months’ imprisonment as the starting point for sentencing. Taking into account the defendant’s age, Cheng reduced the term by one month, imposing an eight-month custodial sentence.
According to the case, the defendant sought to process an insurance policy belonging to Anna Kwok. She is accused of colluding with foreign or external forces to endanger national security and is currently wanted by the police’s National Security Department, which has offered a reward for information leading to her arrest.
