A fire broke out near the rooftop staircase of a building at the disciplined services quarters on Fung Shing Street in Ngau Chi Wan on Sunday evening, prompting the evacuation of about 50 residents.
The blaze was reported around 6.30pm, with black smoke seen coming from the area. Firefighters arrived and deployed one jet and a breathing apparatus team, quickly bringing the flames under control and extinguishing the fire.
According to preliminary information, a rubbish bin caught fire at the scene and was destroyed. Fire services and police conducted an initial investigation and deemed the cause of the fire suspicious. The case has been classified as arson.
No injuries were reported as residents evacuated to safety on their own.
