Man sustains back injury after suspected short-circuit fire in Mong Kok

A fire in a Mong Kok unit injured one man Sunday afternoon, with preliminary findings suggesting an electrical short circuit in an extension cord as the cause. 

Police received multiple reports around 1pm regarding a blaze in a tong lau on Shan Tung Street. 

Online footage from the scene captured flames erupting from a sixth-floor window, igniting laundry hung outside.

Firefighters responded quickly, deploying a water jet and a breathing apparatus team to extinguish the fire, along with a search and rescue team to assist in evacuations.

Approximately ten residents were safely evacuated during the operation.

A 34-year-old male resident sustained a back injury and was transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. 

According to police, initial investigations suggest the fire originated by a short circuit in an extension cord, with no criminal involvement. 

An investigation is ongoing.
