Around 9pm yesterday, police received reports from about 20 residents in Hung Hom's Laguna Verde that a yacht anchored offshore was playing loud rhythmic pop music, including a high-energy Taiwanese hit, clearly audible far inland.
The vessel was brightly lit with underwater lights creating glaring reflections on the water.
The marine police arrived quickly, used loudspeakers to order the music to be lowered, and summoned the person in charge to the stern for a talk.
The yacht was hosting a private gathering with around 20 people. After advice and a warning, the sound system was switched off, restoring quiet.
The case was recorded as a noise complaint for follow-up.
Online, affected residents described the noise reaching the 30th floor, calling it outrageous and claiming such incidents happen almost monthly, urging stricter enforcement.
Police reminds the public that under the Noise Control Ordinance, causing disturbing noise in public places or nearby areas (including at sea) between 11pm and 7am is an offense punishable by prosecution.
