The new term of the Legislative Council (LegCo) will hold its first meeting at 11am on Wednesday, with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu delivering an address.
The city leader will outline the government’s expectations for the new LegCo term and highlight the importance of positive interaction between the executive authorities and the legislature.
He will also address matters related to disaster relief and follow-up support in the aftermath of the fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po.
Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki will propose a motion on post-fire support and reconstruction work, including the provision of emergency financial aid, medical and emotional support services, post-disaster care, temporary accommodation, and long-term resettlement solutions.
The motion will also *affirm LegCo’s* cooperation with the government in advancing reforms, including proactively exploring legislative review and updates, enhancing existing systems, addressing loopholes, promoting systematic reform, and breaking down barriers of vested interests.
Separately, Roundtable lawmaker Mark Chong Ho-fung will propose a motion urging the government to comprehensively reform building maintenance regulations and procedures.
The motion also calls for a rigorous crackdown on bid-rigging in maintenance works, enhanced material specification requirements of work materials, stepped-up inspections at building maintenance work sites, and strengthened oversight of the construction process.
Four lawmakers, including Chan Hok-fung, Bill Tang Ka-piu, and Nicholas Chan Hiu-Fung, will propose amendments to the motion.
